There are artists whose careers follow a carefully planned path—and then there is Daniel Dens.

Born in Belgium, Daniel arrived in the United States by sailboat in his early twenties, beginning a life shaped by travel, exploration, risk, and an instinct for making things.

He eventually landed in Mexico, where he spent years immersed in another world entirely: diving and exploring the remarkable cave systems of the Yucatán Peninsula. He owned a dive shop, traveled extensively, and built a life around adventure and discovery.

It was during a break from diving that an unexpected turn occurred. Daniel began designing and producing sarongs for the beach and learned the process of silkscreen printing. What began as a practical way of creating textiles would eventually become one of the foundations of his artistic career.

His next chapter brought him to Venice, California. Living and working near the Venice Boardwalk, Daniel began making and selling paintings alongside his close friend and fellow artist Thomas Maennl. Their work gained momentum, and the two eventually decided to take a chance on New York.

They arrived by train with artwork, ambition, and very little money.

Daniel began hanging his work on the streets of SoHo. Before long, those streets became an unlikely doorway into the New York art world. Collectors, designers, creative directors, galleries, and advertising agencies discovered his work, and Daniel eventually established a studio near The Brookyn Navy Yard.

Over the following 15 years in New York, he refined his distinctive approach to silkscreen, painting, assemblage, and sculpture. Drawing from music, popular culture, advertising, nostalgia, celebrity, and the imagery of mass media, Daniel transformed familiar icons into bold, meticulously handmade works.

His art has since traveled far beyond the streets where it was first discovered, entering exhibitions and private collections around the world.

Today, Daniel is working in Europe and beginning another evolution in his artistic practice. His future work will move in new directions while retaining the visual instincts, craftsmanship, humor, cultural references, and unmistakable sensibility that have defined his career.

But an important chapter of that career remains here in California.

THE CALIFORNIA COLLECTION

A significant selection of Daniel Dens' existing work is currently available in Southern California.

These are large-scale, highly finished works produced by hand using quality materials, often in very small editions. Despite their scale and craftsmanship, many remain surprisingly accessible to collectors.

For interior designers, architects, hospitality projects, art consultants, new collectors, and established collectors alike, this is an opportunity to acquire work from a distinctive period in Daniel's career before he moves fully into his next body of work.

Bold. Graphic. Nostalgic. Playful. Beautifully made.

Each painting is created by Daniel using silkscreen as the medium. Daniel’s concept of “painting with the screens” creates his unique style and texture throughout his various works. He hand primes a thick cotton canvas, and prepares each step of the exposure process in his studio.
